FESTIVALS OF SIKKIM
Hi guys! Welcome to my third blog. Today I will tell you about the various festivals that people of Sikkim celebrate. The Sikkim festivals are celebrated with a lot of pomp and show and as per the Buddhist calendar. Throughout all these festivals the citizens of Sikkim indulge in vibrant and lively dances and music. So , without wasting time let's begin...
1. Saga Dawa
Saga Dawa is an amazing festival that is triple blessed. This is a very sacred Buddhist festival, especially for the Mahayana Buddhists. On this particular day the Buddhists visit the monasteries, offer the prayers and butter lamps as they were the three significant events associated with the existence of Buddha which are celebrated at this event. These proceedings are the Lord Buddha’s birth, Enlightenment of Lord Buddha and passing away of the Lord Buddha or his attaining Nirvana. The festival takes place on the full moon day in the 4th month of the Buddhist Calender at the end of May and the beginning of June. This festival takes place in the beautiful city of Gangtok.
2. Phang Lhabsol
It is unique as it celebrates nature. The festival and all its celebrations are surrounding the third highest peak in the world, the Kanchenjunga or Khangchendzonga. Besides celebrating the peak this festival also honors the treaty signed by Bhutias and Lepchas where all the local deities were welcomed to witness this occasion. Celebrated around the fifteenth day which falls in the seventh month as per their calendar, end of August as per the standard calendar, the festival is a depiction of the deity who is the guardian by the lama who dons the garb and dances.. This scenes is accompanies by much joking and laughter.
3. LOSOONG FESTIVAL
Beginning with the list of Sikkim famous festivals, Losoong is one of the most important festivals in this mesmerizing Indian state in the North East. This festival is the start of Sikkimese New Year – the reason why it is celebrated with immense joy and fervor. This is also the season of harvesting for the local communities and since the festival also coincides with this time, the celebration and merriment is doubled.
4. LOSAR
Festival which is heralded by the Guthor Chaam that witnesses the lamas of Rumtek and Pemayangtse showcasing the traditional and beautiful dance. Celebrated in the month of February, the Gyalpo Losar is about offering flowers to the monasteries, visiting friends and families and hoping for a better year.
5. BUMCHU
In January at the Tashiding monastery, the Bumchu festival is renowned in the West Sikkim. All Through this festival, the pot that is filled with the sacred water is put open by the Lamas present in the monastery. During the entire process, a small fraction of the holy water is distributed among the disciples and the pot is refilled with water and conserved, when the festival is over and is opened at the time of the next Bumchu.
